The Ecosystem Filtration

The balance of a naturally filtering Ecosystem in your pond is integral and requires a number of different mechanisms working together. Much like a puzzle, there are diverse and individual components that collaborate together to complete a healthy established pond system.

• The ‘Skimmer’ (mechanical filter) is where the pump is held and pre-filters the water and skims debris from the top to prevent an increase of organic materials building up on the bottom of the pond.
• The ‘Biofall’ (biological filter) maintains an area for valuable bacteria to inhabit and removes excess nutrients from the water.
• ‘Rocks, Pebbles and Sand’ give a natural appearance and they provide surface areas for valuable bacteria to break down extra nutrients in the water and dissolve organic fragments on the bottom of the pond.
• ‘Pumps and Plumbing’ are essential to circulate the correct water flow and deliver the necessary oxygen levels for healthy fish and plant life.
• ‘Fish’ are an integral part of pond maintenance. As long as they are not overfed, they will keep the algae at bay and reduce maintenance in your pond. Fish can become a feature of your pond and can even become pets with intimate names.
• ‘Aquatic Plants’ are the purest filter nature has to offer and flourish from the excess nutrients in the pond, therefore depriving algae from its food source. With the appropriate coverage, colourful aquatic plants are critical for the overall health of the ecosystem. We like to include a colourful mixture of plants that attract butterflies, dragonflies and hummingbirds. eg. Water Lilies, Lotus, Marsh Marigold, Japanese Marigold, Pickerel Rush and Miniature Cattail.
